The Truth in Miami

The Miami Heat had a foul to give, and Paul Pierce still intimidated his defender enough to dribble within the arc and take a shot that was so clutch in this series it gave me the chance to shout, "Miami can't ; handle The Truth!".

In reality, Miami would probably have lost if the game had gone to over-time. With Dwayne Wade on the Heat bench after landing awkwardly on Ray Allen's foot after taking an ill-advised 3, it was apparent that the Heat would eventually lose this game. That's despite the Heat's bench outscoring the C's bench 31 to 10. Of course, aside from Kendrick Perkins having a cold night, the other four Celtic's starters looked like they wanted to just get this Heat series over with.

;So now the C's are up 3-0 in the series, and they're actually one game away from not just sweeping the Heat in 4, but sweeping them in 7 if the regular season games are taken into account. That means that this aging team will have a few extra days off before the probable Cavalier's match up in the second round. The Cav's were foolish to let the Bulls win a game. After the grueling 7 game series the C's had against the Bulls last year, we're all too aware of how tenacious that Bulls team can be. They're young, but they don't quit, and I'm willing to bet they take the Cav's to at least game 6 now.

Cs Bs and Sox Oh My

After a nightmare weekend for all the Boston teams (except the Bruins, who barely managed an over-time win)...It was good to see the Red Sox remember that Fenway is a hitters ball park on Monday night. It was good to see the Celtics infuriate the Cleveland fans, instead of infuriating me by blowing a ten point fourth quarter lead.

;Ok, so they almost blew a 25 point lead instead, but the very fact that they had double digit leads in the fourth quarter of both home games against the Cavs should suggest who is the better team. However, as the Cavs haven't had a chance in the Garden yet, I'll just say that the Celtics Should beat the Cavs.

;Rondo is playing out of his mind, with 19 assists that led to 45 points in game 2. His energy is the engine of this Celtics team. Rasheed Wallace also remembered how to be a factor in a play-off game. If we continue to see that consistency of effort (and a 7-8 night) then the Celtics bench again becomes a factor, and it will be difficult for any team (with perhaps the exception of an extremely deep Magic team) to beat the Celtics.

Big Week for the Thunder

Losing to Indiana last night was tough. ; If they had one last night, they would be tied for the 5th seed with Phoenix and 2 games ahead of 7th in front of San Antonio. ; But, that didn't happen. ; All is not lost, it just makes this week more difficult. ; Tonight they are at home against the Spurs. ; They have a one game lead over them. ; A loss tonight would put the Thunder in 7th. ; A win would keep them in 6th and put 2 games between them and San Antonio and more breathing room going into the last 14 games.

The Thunder play the Spurs, the Lakers, Houston, and Portland. Going 2-2 would be fine. ; That would keep them in the playoffs and still have a shot at a good seed. Anything above that would be great. Anything below that would put them in danger of falling to the 8th seed. ; It all starts tonight with San Antonio. ;

With the championship team the Pistons had three guards that could defend and shoot. Now they have five gaurds and only two of which can defend and one that is getting old (Hamilton). They have to draft a young point guard that is a true point guard and work on Stuckey at the two spot. Or even make a trade for rookie sensation Collison who is going to want a starting job and won't find one in New Orleans. We have some guys down low that can last for ;a run to the playoffs next year but with Ben Gordon taking crazy shots and ;no point guard they don't have a chance next season. you trade Ben Gordon to the Hornets for Collison and ;they have a point

The Need for Relevance

As a Pacer fan, the obvious highlight of my season was the ESPN 30 for 30 story on Reggie Miller vs the New York Knicks. I loved every second of the documentary. I thought it was put together very well, and the best part was all of the memories it brought back.

On the other hand it was bitter-sweet in some ways. The Pacers have been awful for the last few years, but I have still enjoyed the NBA and told myself, "It's OK that the Pacers aren't competitive because it is still great to watch all of these high profile teams go at it in the Playoffs." ;

;But that was wrong. There is something incredible about living and dying with every point in an NBA Playoff series. And Pacer fans got to experience that excitement consistently from the mid 90's to the early 00's. Honestly, I took it for granted. And seeing those old games again, I remembered how much I hated the Knicks and how much I cared about how those games turned out. It reminded me that the Pacers used to

Welcome to the starting lineup Toney Douglas! The Knicks are 2-0 in games Douglas has started, and he has clearly given the team a spark it was missing when it started Duhon and Sergio Rodriguez. Douglas has averaged 20 points over his last three games, and has brought great energy to the defensive end. His three steals against Philadelphia and clutch three point shooting helped keep the 76ers from coming back.
;Another big contributor to the Knicks lately has been Bill “Sky” Walker. Walker’s high flying dunks and surprising outside touch have been on display of late. He’s shooting near 60% as a Knick and has been a pleasant surprise in general when considering he was originally a throw-in in the Nate Robinson trade. Tracy McGrady’s frequent injuries have opened up minutes for Walker and he’s taking advantage.

The Cleveland Cavaliers acquired two-time All-Star Antawn Jamison in a three-team trade Wednesday night. ;
Cleveland, who has won 11 consecutive games and owns the best record in the league at 43-11, only squandered Zydrunas Ilgauskas and their first round pick to obtain Jamison. ;
Jamison, 33, the fourth overall selection in the 1998 NBA Draft out of the University of North Carolina, is a skilled and rugged power forward who was averaging an impressive 20.5 points for the Washington Wizards prior to last night’s transaction. ;
At this juncture, barring an injury to superstar Lebron James, the Cavaliers seem destined to easily waltz through the Eastern Conference and into the NBA Finals in June. ;
James, 25, a three-time All-NBA First Team selection and the 2009 MVP, is indisputably the best player in the world today. ;

CLAAAANG!!! ; Another errant Knicks shot glances off the rim. ; The New York Knickerbockers have mastered the art of losing for the past 10 years. ; The only silver lining after this season is the possibility of signing two big name, “max contract” players. ; The Knicks traded away their upcoming draft pick (along with Jared Jeffries and others) to Houston, ;to free up more money for these players. ; Nothing is guaranteed, the Knicks aren’t necessarily getting anyone for their trouble. ;

The losing that the Knicks have been doing is a relatively new experience for their head coach, Mike D’Antoni. ; D’Antoni came over from Phoenix, where he had an outstanding winning percentage, playoff appearances every year, and usually a late-season meeting with the San Antonio Spurs that ultimately would decide who would come out of the west. ; Before he coached Amare Stoudemire, Steve Nash and Shawn Marion to 60 wins a year. ; Now he leads Al Harrington and a band of inexperienced, below average knicks to likely two 30 win seasons. ;

I’ve been extremely busy lately so I haven’t had as much time to write, but I have wanted to weigh in on a few topics before the week is over and hopefully I can come through with a column for tomorrow. ; Let’s be random…

Did I hear that correctly? ; Appartently the Golden State Warriors turned down a trade that would have netted them O.J. Mayo and Nasheen Thabeet for Monta Ellis…craziness
;
There are a lot of interesting rumblings coming out of the 2010 Draft/Combine. ; Tim Tebow is working on changing his throwing motion. ; This is one of the more intriguing stories of the draft. ; It is easy to root for Tebow because of his faith and his character but I just don’t see him being an effective NFL quarterback. ; NFL defenses are too fast, too smart and too powerful for a guy who dominated the college ranks with those same traits. ; His passing ability is very suspect because of that long wind-up release. ; The transformation that he’s attempting will be very difficult as he has thrown with the same motion for the last 20 years. ; Some people try to compare Tebow to Vince Young, but VY has demonstrated the tools and ability to excel on the NFL level. ; Young does everything Tebow does, but way better. ; This should be an interesting development and I’m sure there are GMs and teams out there that can make this marriage work, but I would stay away from this guy for the most part.

Work hard, play smart, play tough, keep your mouth shut, and let things fall into place. There aren’t too many young athletes who heed this advice, but that’s exactly what Ohio State’s Junior leader Evan Turner did. Amazingly, Turner arrived at Ohio State somewhat under the radar.
In 2007-08 Evan Turner came onto the scene in Columbus as a freshman in the shadows of fellow freshman and highly touted recruits Greg Oden, Mike Conley Jr., and Dequan Cook. Those three highly touted recruits ended up leaving after one season at Ohio State to become first round draft picks in the NBA, with Oden being the first pick overall.

So after watching the Cavs play for the last few weeks, and being a current Southern Cal Resident, I came to a few thoughts.
First LeBron is playing better than Kobe, and has more years left in the NBA than Kobe does.
Second Kobe has hit his peak 2-3 years ago. ;
third LeBron has yet to reach his peak, and hes averaging 40 points a game. ;
So the question is, would LeBron be a better fit for the Lakers at this point, because of his natural leadership qualities and abilities to score mass amounts of points, would the Ron Artest / Gasol / James Combo be as leathal as the Kobe-Artest-Gasol combo.. Thoughts?

They traded Ronnie Brewer to Memphis for a future pick. ; They have depth at that position and can absorb the loss. ; Brewer is a restricted free agent and Utah may not be able to match any offers. ; So, they gain a pick for him now. ; Not bad I guess.
Memphis is trying to make the playoffs now and giving up a future pick for something now makes sense. ; Brewer will improve them and I think he was worth the first round pick. ; I don't know that he gets them there, but he will be better than what they could have drafted for.

Grizzlies give Thabeet some time

The Memphis Grizzlies will be hopeful that the NBA D-League lives up to its name after they sent 2009 No 2 draft pick Hasheem Thabeet down to the North Dakota Wizards and made just a little bit of history in the process.

Thabeet, who was expected to be a fairly raw rookie anyway, has had little or no success since the Grizzlies drafted him out of Connecticut last summer, and he is the highest draft pick yet to be sent down to the Developmental League, the NBA’s own version of the minors.

The 7ft 3in giant, who has only really had any success as a shot-blocker and often looked lost out on the court against more seasoned professionals, will be working mainly on his shooting according to NBA Tips, after averaging less than three points per game.

Thabeet has been on court in 50 Memphis games this season, but only logged an average of 10 minutes, scoring in double figures just once against Phoenix in early January.

Dallas Mavericks' new players played well last night, beating the top team in the east in Orlando Magic.
Caron Butler and Brenden Haywood combined for 73 minutes 16 rebounds and 31 points. ; A really good bigman and another scorer. ; Good Job Dallas.
Another top team fell to newcomers. ; Denver fell to Washington and their new lineup. ; No Arenas, no Jamison, no Butler, no problem. ; Josh Howard had 20 points in 23 minutes. More stunning was the 25 points the Wizards outscored the Nuggets in that 23 minutes. ; Also, Al Thornton (just acquired from the Clippers) had 21 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 block shots in 31 minutes. Oh I can't wait until Ilgauskas joins the group. ;
Expect Thornton and Howard to play with a chip on their shoulders, showing the teams that didn't want them that they were wrong. The Wizards have players that are auditioning for the big free agent bucks. ; They are going to be competitive for the rest of the season.

Welcome! ; This is my inaugural post on NBABasketballonline. ; I will not spend too much time initially on who I am, but will get into my thoughts and love for the NBA. ; In due course you should develop a clear indication of who I am and where I am coming from. ;

To make things clear right away though I am a Lakers fan. ; But beyond the Lakers I am a fan of the league. ; There exists no other medium where you can watch the most naturally gifted athletes battle night in and night out (well in the playoffs at least). ; The majority of my time is spent rooting for the Lake Show, but by no means does that mean I do not appreciate or any less fascinated with the supreme prowess of Tim Duncan or the fierce competitiveness of KG or the ridiculous all around offensive talents of Melo. ; I could comprise my entire initial blog with these adjective laden statements respecting the talents the NBA’s elite, but for our reading pleasure I will delve into more significant opinions I deem worth sharing with others. ;

I’ve been extremely busy lately so I haven’t had as much time to write, but I have wanted to weigh in on a few topics before the week is over and hopefully I can come through with a column for tomorrow. ; Let’s be random…

Did I hear that correctly? ; Appartently the Golden State Warriors turned down a trade that would have netted them O.J. Mayo and Nasheen Thabeet for Monta Ellis…craziness
;
There are a lot of interesting rumblings coming out of the 2010 Draft/Combine. ; Tim Tebow is working on changing his throwing motion. ; This is one of the more intriguing stories of the draft. ; It is easy to root for Tebow because of his faith and his character but I just don’t see him being an effective NFL quarterback. ; NFL defenses are too fast, too smart and too powerful for a guy who dominated the college ranks with those same traits. ; His passing ability is very suspect because of that long wind-up release. ; The transformation that he’s attempting will be very difficult as he has thrown with the same motion for the last 20 years. ; Some people try to compare Tebow to Vince Young, but VY has demonstrated the tools and ability to excel on the NFL level. ; Young does everything Tebow does, but way better. ; This should be an interesting development and I’m sure there are GMs and teams out there that can make this marriage work, but I would stay away from this guy for the most part.

CLAAAANG!!! ; Another errant Knicks shot glances off the rim. ; The New York Knickerbockers have mastered the art of losing for the past 10 years. ; The only silver lining after this season is the possibility of signing two big name, “max contract” players. ; The Knicks traded away their upcoming draft pick (along with Jared Jeffries and others) to Houston, ;to free up more money for these players. ; Nothing is guaranteed, the Knicks aren’t necessarily getting anyone for their trouble. ;

The losing that the Knicks have been doing is a relatively new experience for their head coach, Mike D’Antoni. ; D’Antoni came over from Phoenix, where he had an outstanding winning percentage, playoff appearances every year, and usually a late-season meeting with the San Antonio Spurs that ultimately would decide who would come out of the west. ; Before he coached Amare Stoudemire, Steve Nash and Shawn Marion to 60 wins a year. ; Now he leads Al Harrington and a band of inexperienced, below average knicks to likely two 30 win seasons. ;

Lakers loom as Grizz road trip nears end

Although it is usually a highlight of Lakers-Grizzlies meetings, the Gasol Brothers will not face off tonight when Pau's Lakers host Marc's Grizzlies. ; Pau will miss tonight's game as he continues to recover from a hamstring injury, although by all accounts it seems to be completely healed. ; As with Allen Iverson's situation, though, with a hamstring you can never be too careful. ; Last season, Pau held a slight edge over his younger brother, averaging 16 ppg in the teams' four matchups, all Laker wins, while Marc averaged 13 ppg. ; However, Marc outscored Pau in each of the last two meetings, 17-13 and 14-12, respectively.
The Lakers may be somewhat fatigued as they enter tonight's game coming off consecutive overtime games against Oklahoma City and Houston. ; I wouldn't count on it, but if the Grizzlies can get off to another quick start and punish the Lakers physically with Zach Randolph and Marc, they could hang around. ; They just have to be consistent and efficient on offense. ; They absolutely must limit their turnovers because they are going to ;need all the extra ;possessions they can get.

Sacramento lossed: ; Kevin Martin and Hilton Armstrong
New York is taking a gamble, but a good one. ; What they got isn't working. ; They have a lot of contracts that are going to expire and unloaded more salary. ; So, they will have enough money to sign 2 free agents the maximum. ; LeBron James is the first choice. ; The other could be McGrady as he gets to audition for the big money for the next 30 games. ; That is smart for all parties involved. ; New York gets to see if McGrady is a fit. ; McGrady gets to prove how good he is. And, Houston is rid of his contract and got something out of it.

Grizzlies give Thabeet some time

The Memphis Grizzlies will be hopeful that the NBA D-League lives up to its name after they sent 2009 No 2 draft pick Hasheem Thabeet down to the North Dakota Wizards and made just a little bit of history in the process.

Thabeet, who was expected to be a fairly raw rookie anyway, has had little or no success since the Grizzlies drafted him out of Connecticut last summer, and he is the highest draft pick yet to be sent down to the Developmental League, the NBA’s own version of the minors.

The 7ft 3in giant, who has only really had any success as a shot-blocker and often looked lost out on the court against more seasoned professionals, will be working mainly on his shooting according to NBA Tips, after averaging less than three points per game.

Thabeet has been on court in 50 Memphis games this season, but only logged an average of 10 minutes, scoring in double figures just once against Phoenix in early January.

Psychotic Los Angeles Lakers small forward Ron Artest claimed this week that he boozed a French cognac during games when he played for the Chicago Bulls from 1999-2002.

“I used to drink Hennessy at halftime,” Artest, 30, said in an interview with the Sporting News. “I kept it in my locker. I’d just walk to the liquor store and get it.”

Artest, who was born and raised in the Queensbridge projects in Queens, New York, played college basketball at St. John’s University and he was selected by the Bulls with the 16th overall pick in the 1999 NBA Draft.

“When I was a 19-year-old father, whew. I was a single pimp! I was wild,” said the unbalanced hoopster who infamously once attended a practice with the Indiana Pacers donning only a bath robe. “A lot of marijuana and alcohol. Cleveland set for title run

Cleveland just got a lot better. ; ; They traded Zydranus Ilgauskas and his 11million dollar expiring contract to Washington for Antwain Jamison who has the same salary. ; ; ; ; ; This adds a power scorer to the lineup while giving up nothing. ; Anderson Varejo has been the backup at both power forward and center. This will continue. ; Hickson's minutes may decrease, but he is still developing so that is ok. ; The first pick won't matter if they win the title. ; ; ; ; ; ; Also acquired is Sebastian Telfair an up and down career since joining the NBA. ; They have point guard injuries so that is an added bonus.
Washington continues to dump salary by trading for Ilgauskas. His 11 mil is the same as Jamison's but expires this year. ; They also unloaded Drew Gooden whom they acquired from Dallas last week. ; Washington gets Al Thornton who is young and improving. ;

With the new NBA season set to tip off with four games tonight, here are some of the things I’ll be watching for in tonight’s action.
Boston @ Cleveland, 7:30pm
I can’t wait to see LeBron again this season. Last year, coming off the Olympics, you could see that his focus was on improving defensively. Now, without a summer in the spotlight, I’m curious to see if he’s made any improvements to his already unreal game. Is this the year we finally see LeBron use his Karl Malone-like body to beast on people inside?
Also, I’m curious to see what kind of pregame theatrics the Cavs come up with. You know Shaq can’t stand to be out of the spotlight, I wouldn’t be surprised if he tries to one-up LeBron’s chalk thing with something of his own.

After several hours parked in front of the NBA League Pass for the past two days, it’s time for some first impressions.

How good was he last night? I predicted the Denver Nuggets to be the third best team in the West this season, and that was assuming that Ty Lawson would play like a rookie point guard.
But his 17 points, six assists, and four rebounds, plus very solid fourth quarter minutes in a close game against a decent Utah team, shows that he may be a real X factor for this team moving forward.

Lopez was a monster last night, finishing with 27 points, 15 rebounds, five blocks, and four assists. Of course, the Nets lost, mainly because they couldn’t hold off the mighty T’Wolves down the stretch, but it certainly wasn’t because of Lopez.

Last night, the Thunder beat the Pacers, keeping the 8th spot in the playoffs. ; ;
OKC only trailed once 37-36. But, that lasted for less than a minute. ; They built an 18 point lead in the third quarter. ; Then, Troy Murphy went on a little run and cut it to 10 at quarter's end. Then, they managed to tie it in the 4th. ; But, Durant couldn't be stopped and there were no second chances for the Pacers.
The offense never seemed to get going. ; When Durant was in the game, the offense scored of course. ; But, there still wasnt a flow at times. ; ; The Thunder would be a lead and then substitute and the lead would start to erase. ; Brooks is doing a good job of getting his players experience when he can. ; Maynor played quite a bit at times. ; He looks like a rookie. He went 0 for 3 from the floor. ; All three shots were really turn overs. ; He would penetrate and have no where to go or pass it so he shot it. ; He is going to be a good player, but he just isnt there yet. ; He needs playing time and experience which is what Brooks is giving him. ; I don't know if he will be ready when playoff time comes. ;

Playoff Knicks

With the Knicks victory over Chicago last night, they pulled to a half game of the playoffs.
David Lee put fourth another solid performance in 18 points and 21 rebounds, along with 5 assists. ;
Gallinari had a terrible night shooting, but still managed 7 rebounds, 3 assissts and 3 blocks. ;
Duhon and Chandler didn't put up spectacular numbers but had solid performances. ; Jarred Jeffries also played well.
Al Harrington also added 20 points off the bench and is bidding for 6th man of the year award.
That is a group that is getting better as the season goes along. ; If they can get anything positive from Larry Hughes, Nate Robinson, and/or Eddie Curry, they will be in great shape. ; Those players may be traded, but it could be a hard go in finding takers. ; Rookies Toney Douglas and Jordan Hill have been early dissappointments, but they are young and will grow.

After the Cowboys beat up on the Washington Redskins a couple of weeks ago I had a chance to catch up with one of my old teammates, John Phillips, who currently plays tight end for the Cowboys. ; We only spoke briefly but we did manage to discuss UVA’s recent hiring of Mike London as the new head coach. ; I instantly realized that I had yet to publish my opinion on this hire and it is certainly a topic that deserves some discussion.

I’d like to say that I predicted ;that 2009 ;would be ;Al Groh’s last season as Virginia’s head football coach, but I think the writing was on the wall after the loss to William & Mary. ; Groh is a good coach, so I think he’ll land on his feet real soon (hopefully in the NFL). ; Now, UVA has to find a way back to its former glory. ; The first step in the process was hiring a new head coach and I think the AD

We’ve seen this act before. Andrew Bynum, through the first five games, is averaging over 20-10, yet again.

It’s nothing new. For the third straight season, the young, potential stud, center for the Los Angeles Lakers has hit the ground running and has shown flashes of being an all-star caliber center in the NBA.

And, for the third straight season, Bynum’s great start may be overshadowed by, yet another, major injury.

With 24.7 seconds left in the Lakers overtime win over the Rockets last night, Kobe Bryant dished a perfect pass to Bynum under the hoop and he was fouled as he tried to convert the lay-up. It wasn’t an obscenely hard foul, but certainly one in which the Rockets were making it clear they weren’t about to allow Bynum to score without heading to the free throw line.

Women Cant Compete in the NBA

NBA Commissioner David Stern predicted last week that a woman will play in the league within the next decade.
“I don’t want to get into all kinds of arguments with players and coaches about the likelihood,” Stern told Sports Illustrated. “But I really think it’s a good possibility.”
Stern, 67, who became the Commissioner in 1984, said he realizes that many people are skeptical that women could compete physically with men.
However, Stern offered the reasoning behind his belief and he cited examples of other female athletes who have flourished performing athletically versus men.
“If you look at world records, let’s say track and field, you’ll see how the women have moved up to what would have been records several decades ago for men,” said Stern, a graduate of Columbia Law School in 1966. “Watch the WNBA and you see the shooting percentages, the passing and the like. Basketball is a five-person game and you have zones and you can do a variety of other things.”

Pistons youre TAY-ring up my heart

After 6 consecutive losses and a 5-10 record so far, will the Pistons be able to come back?
A big question in mind is that if Tayshaun Prince and Rip Hamilton were playing, would the number of losses be less than it is right now. It's a very hypothetical question because the chemistry of the team would be completely different. If we look at the team we have playing now, they started off strong, became shaky, and now are losing to every team they play.The losses haven't even been by a landslide. It's not the skill level that's not sufficient, but the little things in the game. That free throw someone missed, that rebound someone could have got, or lack of full effort all 48 minutes are what caused the losses.
Every game is an opportunity to redeem themselves because there isn't a team out there that is impossible to beat. It's about how badly the Pistons want that win. They have the potential and all the components to be a threat to every other team in the league; they just haven't shown it yet. Come on, Pistons! Let's see some passion out on the court and some wins, because quite frankly all these losses are tearing up my heart.
